Phonics Screening Check

The phonics screen check is taken by all children at the end of Year 1. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how a child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether a child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.

This year this will be done on the week commencing 10th June 2024.

This is a link to the current government guidance

We will be doing lots of practice in school, however, if you would like your child to have extra practise at home they will have their Spelling Shed & Teach Your Monster username and password readily available to use.

You will see the letter that has been sent out to all parents containing addition information at the bottom of this page.

Homework

Whilst homework has not been formally set in Year 1. It is expected that all children read at least 4 times a week with an adult and log what they have read on Boom Reader. Early reading is extremely important. Reading quality stories to children not only introduces them to a wide range of vocabulary but supports their communication and language skills. The natural conversations that arise when sharing books also develop children's understanding and comprehension skills and can foster a love of reading later in life.

Other Useful Information

PE kits should be in at the beginning of the week and left in school.  This allows us to be flexible according to the weather.

Project homework and knowledge organisers will be available to view every term on this webpage.
